http://www.searchsmbhk.com/article.php?type=article&id_article=1897

FMC (fixed-mobile convergence)

First came across at Huawei site

http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci1231530,00.html
Fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) is the trend towards seamless connectivity between fixed and wireless telecommunications networks. The term also describes any physical network that allows cellular telephone sets to function smoothly with the fixed network infrastructure.

The ultimate goal of FMC is to optimize transmission of all data, voice and video communications to and among end users, no matter what their locations or devices. In the more immediate future, FMC means that a single device can connect through and be switched between wired and wireless networks.

FMC is sometimes seen as a way to reverse the trend towards fixed-mobile substitution (FMS), the increasing tendency for consumers and businesses to substitute cellular telephones for hard-wired or cordless landline sets.

Greenhouse gas

First encountered at Cisco EnergyWise presentation

Greenhouse gases are gases in an atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect.[1] Common greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and chlorofluorocarbons.

SAN

SAN Wiki

A storage area network (SAN) is an architecture to attach remote computer storage devices to servers in such a way that the devices appear as locally attached to the operating system.

Network attached storage (NAS), in contrast to SAN, uses file-based protocols such as NFS or SMB/CIFS where it is clear that the storage is remote, and computers request a portion of an abstract file rather than a disk block.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Software as a Service (SaaS, typically pronounced 'sass') is a model of software deployment whereby a provider licenses an application to customers for use as a service on demand. SaaS software vendors may host the application on their own web-servers or download the application to the consumer device, disabling it after use or after the on-demand contract expires.

Cisco VFrame

Cisco Virtualizes Network Services with VFrame

The VFrame Data Center (VFrame DC) is a software/hardware platform that, seeking to whittle down the number of physical devices in corporate data centers, provisions services with the simple acts of point-and-click. Cisco is branding this as part of their Data Center 3.0 movement.

VFrame DC virtualizes network services with an 1U appliance and is stateless. This leads to the liberating ability to move services between servers and change the identity of each machine in a rapid, ad-hoc fashion.

“We are not the virtualization engine of the datacenter; we are a middleware platform that can provision the networking components and work with these other endpoint systems,” said Project Manager Bill Erdman of Cisco's datacenter technology group, during an interview with Internet News.

Cisco and VMware buddy up for VFrame Data CenterCisco and VMware buddy up for VFrame Data Center

Using VMware ESX Server capacity on demand, Cisco aims to give the provisioning of physical resources a kick in the pants to meet the speed of provisioning on virtual machines

The integration allows the VFrame to load VMware ESX Server onto bare-metal computer hardware — something that previously could only be done with Windows and Linux — and configure the network and storage connections that ESX needs. The two vendors snuggled close to create a two-way policy API (based on SOAP and XML) to coordinate the configuration.

Cisco claims the VFrame can load ESX Server onto physical hardware from a SAN in under 10 minutes. The VFrame also automatically configures the SAN back-end, including SAN fabrics and shared LUNs (logical unit numbers), based on predefined design templates.

The VFrame is a 1U appliance that links compute, storage and network resources as virtualized network services.

Cisco preps for virtualized 'Data Center 3.0'
"Because the network is uniquely positioned to be the platform for the data center, we are investing in innovations to help our customers transform their data centers for improved efficiency and increased business productivity," said Cisco CEO John Chambers.

VFrame DC is a 1U appliance that links compute, storage and network resources as virtualized network services. It offers a point and click UI and a policy engine that allows for automated resource changes in response to outages and performance flux. Additionally, such changes can be controlled by external monitoring systems, thanks to integration with a VFrame DC web services application programming interface.

For example, an administrator could use VFrame to deal with a sudden spike in traffic on a web server. The admin could set up a policy to automatically provision a new web server if the number of requests passed a certain level. Alternatively, the appliance could be used to reconfigure servers to handle different tasks depending on the time of day.

"VFrame Data Center offers unprecedented orchestration within the data center network, for dynamically re-programming server, storage and network resources into agile application services," said Jayshree Ullal, Cisco's Data Center senior veep. "This agility addresses the need for greater time to market for complex E-commerce application deployments by customers."

SearchDataCenter.com Definitions

TCO (total cost of ownership) is a type of calculation designed to help consumers and enterprise managers assess both direct and indirect costs and benefits related to the purchase of any IT component. The intention is to arrive at a final figure that will reflect the effective cost of purchase, all things considered. When you decide to buy a computer you may go through a TCO analysis: for example, the greater cost price of a high-end computer might be one consideration, but one that would have to be balanced by adding likely repair costs and earlier replacement to the purchase cost of the bargain brand.

Wikipedia exceeds $6m donation goal

Wales' personal begging earns last $2m

Free research: Application platforms, the state of play

A personal plea for cash by Wikipedia's founder, Jimmy Wales, has melted enough hearts to keep the ubiquitous online encyclopedia running for another fiscal year – and then some.

The Wikimedia Foundation announced today that it's raised more than $6.2m since launching a fund-raising campaign in early November. The website exceeded its goal of approximately $6m to fund operations through June 30, 2009, with more than 125,000 donors contributing worldwide.

In late December, the non-profit org appeared to be falling short of its financial target until Wales posted a personal appeal for donations in place of Wikipedia's standard fund-raising banner. In the remaining eight days of the month, Wikimedia pulled in more than 50,000 contributions totaling $2m, the foundation said.

"You have proven that Wikipedia matters to you, and that you support our mission: to bring free knowledge to the planet, free of charge and free of advertising," Wales wrote in a thank-you message.

Surplus revenue will be placed into a reserve fund for offsetting operating costs beyond the fiscal year, Wales said. The foundation also provides a breakdown of Wikipedia's 2008/2009 budget, which totals $5,974,000.

The site, which employs only 23 workers, bills itself as the fourth most visited site on the internet according to numbers by comScore. Of course, Wikipedia's donation box is still open – so there's still plenty of opportunities to raise more cash.

In the spirit of Wikipedia, however, the best way to raise more revenue is simply for someone to edit the entry to indicate the foundation has raised – oh, say $600 zillion. Instant money, although there may be [citation needed]. ®

One of the fastest growing and popular sites on the internet for gathering information on a variety of topics is Wikipedia. Wikipedia, which is a combination of the words wiki meaning collaborative ef
fort and encyclopedia, launched on January 15, 2001. It was founded by Jimmy Wales of the Wikimedia foundation, a non-profit organization based in St. Petersburg, Florida. This non-profit's goal is to bring a free and informative encyclopedia to every person on the planet, regardless of whether or not a person has electricity, internet access or a computer. Wikimedia is funded through donations, a portion of which go toward managing and running Wikipedia. Last year Wikipedia's operating costs were $321,000 of which 60% went toward the cost of hardware to support the site.

Thank you from Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales

Dear Reader,

Since July 1, more than 125,000 of you have donated $4 million. In addition, we've received major gifts and foundation support totaling $2 million. This combined revenue will cover our operating expenses for the current fiscal year, ending June 30, 2009.

Your donation makes you a key supporter of the free culture movement, and pays for:

Day-to-day operations: servers, hosting, bandwidth, our staff of just 23 people.

Continued development & improvements of open source software that powers all Wikimedia projects.

Outreach events like Wikipedia Academies: in-person workshops where you can learn more about how to use and edit Wikipedia.

Volunteer support: helping our international volunteer community to grow and to continue to do amazing work.

You can still get involved:

Any donations beyond our $6 million goal are put in a reserve fund, which will help us to offset operating costs beyond the current fiscal year. Your continued support will also serve as a much-needed financial safety net if economic conditions continue to worsen globally.

You have proven that Wikipedia matters to you, and that you support our mission: to bring free knowledge to the planet, free of charge and free of advertising. You've helped make and keep Wikipedia available for the whole world.

I deeply appreciate your support.

Thank you,

Jimmy Wales

Where is my Calendar file?

By default local calendars are stored in a sqlite database file called "storage.sdb". This file is located in your profile folder. (LINK ME)

Network calendars can be stored on WebDAV, CalDAV, and ftp servers and also locally (in this case "Network calendar" just indicates that the iCalendar format is used and not a sqlite database). To find the file, right click on the Calendar in question in the Calendars section. Select "Properties". The file name and path are shown in the label next to "Location".

Firefox 3 smart location bar

Another good feature from Firefox. When you typed some text in the url/address filed (called "location bar" in Firefox), Firefox will try to find the related page for you.

Tips

* When you are looking to go to a website you have previously visited, type a few letters from its web address or page title. Scroll through the autocomplete entries and find the page in the list (type another letter if it is not shown in the list). Press EnterReturn to go to the selected web address. Firefox will give this entry/result combination higher weight in the future.
* Do not clear the Browsing History - usually the richest source of autocomplete entries is from the title/web address combination. Clearing Browsing History will remove these entries from the results.
* Bookmark and tag frequently - used pages. The Location bar will match on the name you give the bookmark and also tags associated with the bookmark. See the Bookmarks article for more information on how to use bookmarks in Firefox. You can improve your autocomplete results by tagging pages with easily-typed tag names.

The Location bar will display results for:

* Web addresses from pages in history that match what you have typed
* Page titles from history that match what you have typed
* Bookmark titles that match what you have typed
* Bookmarks with tag names that match what you've typed

Firefox 3 smart bookmarks folder

Smart Bookmarks folders

Starting in Firefox 3, you can create "Smart Folders" in the Places Library. These folders are like saved searches that update automatically.

Current Smart Folders

After installing Firefox 3, you will already have some Smart folders:

  • Most Visited - available from the Bookmarks Toolbar, this folder looks in your history to find which pages you visit most frequently.
  • Recently Bookmarked - available from the Bookmarks Menu, this folder keeps of the last several bookmarks you've added. Expand the Recently Bookmarked folder to see a list of sites.
  • Recent Tags - available from the Bookmarks Menu, this folder keeps track of the bookmark "tags" you've used most recently. Expand the Recent Tags folder to see a list of tags, then expand each tag to show pages you've recently bookmarked using that tag.

Creating and using new Smart Folders

To create a new Smart Folder based on your browsing history:

  1. Open the Places Library for History by clicking on the History menu and selecting Show All History
  2. In the upper-right corner of the Places Library window, click in the Search History box.
  3. Start typing a search term into the Search History box. The filtered list of matching sites will come up as you type.
  4. Underneath the Search History box, click Save. The Save Search dialog box will appear.
  5. Enter a Name for the new Smart Folder and click OK.

To create a new Smart Folders based on your bookmarks:

  1. Open the Places Library for Bookmarks by clicking Bookmarks menu and selecting Organize Bookmarks...
  2. In the upper-right corner of the Places Library window, click in the Search Bookmarks box.
  3. Start typing a search term into the Search Bookmarks box. The filtered list of matching sites will come up as you type.
    • You can narrow your search to a single Bookmarks folder by clicking on a bookmarks folder in the left half of the Window, and then typing in your search term.
  4. Underneath the Search Bookmarks box, click Save. The Save Search dialog box will appear.
  5. Enter a Name for the new Smart Folder and click OK.

The example below illustrates this process for a Bookmarks folder.

Example

To show how to use Smart Folders, let's look at an example. If you're interested in economics, you might use Firefox's Bookmarks to bookmark and tag pages related to economics.

  1. To find all your bookmarks related to economics, open the Places Library for Bookmarks - click on the Bookmarks menu and select Organize Bookmarks.... The Library window will appear, with the All Bookmarks folder selected.

  2. Click in the top-right corner of the library on the Search Bookmarks bar. Type in econ. The Library will start filtering the list of bookmarks as you type, leaving you with a list of bookmarks with econ in the Name or Location, as well as bookmarks with tag names containing econ in them.

  3. Click Save underneath the Search Bookmarks bar and you'll be prompted to save your search. Let's type "Smart Economics Folder" as the Name and click OK. The Smart Economics Folder will appear in the list of folders.

  4. For easy access, we'll move the new smart folder to the Bookmarks Toolbar. Click on the new smart folder, drag it to the the Bookmarks Toolbar folder, and release it. The folder will be moved. Close the Library to go back to the Firefox window.
  5. In the Firefox window, we see that the new smart folder is now part of the Bookmarks Toolbar. We can click on it to show its contents.

  6. Now, we'll add more pages related to economics. Just visit some new sites, and bookmark a page with econ in the title or web address, or bookmark any page and add a tag with econ in it.

  7. The folder will automatically update itself to include our new bookmarks.
